American Express made an acquisition in Japan after using the Pocket Concierge Restaurant Reservation Service under an undisclosed contract. The acquisition was announced in Japanese and English by James Riney, director of 500 Startups Japan, who invested in Pocket Concierge as one of his first deals in the country. The service was launched in 2013 to help with the booking of quality restaurants, including those that are Michelin-starred and those who have waiting lists of several months for reservations. It currently operates with 800 restaurants and is available in Japanese, English and Chinese, its closest competitors being OpenTable. and the
