Sites such as Amazon and eBay have strongly encouraged consumers to buy online rather than in stores, in part because prices are very competitive and often cheaper than those that buyers might find at traditional retailers. But in the UK, it turns out that some of these low prices are due in part to tax avoidance by sellers, so the government is taking strong action. The UK tax administration has flagged 4,600 online merchants, out of a total of 7,000 surveys, in the last two years, evading sales tax on goods sold in the UK to important sites like Amazon
